Guide 03
Is Claude free, and what can you really do with the free plan?
Short answer: yes. Claude has a genuine free plan. Not a trial that expires, not fourteen days and then a card. You sign up with an email and you can use it.
The longer answer is about where the free plan stops being enough, because that is the part that decides whether you should pay.
What you get without paying
On the free plan you are talking to a capable model, not a stripped-down toy version. You can paste in a document and ask questions about it, write and rewrite text, work through numbers, and hold a long back-and-forth conversation.
What you are limited on is volume. There is a cap on how much you can use within a window of a few hours. Hit it, and you wait for it to reset. Anthropic adjusts these limits over time, so any specific number written on a page like this one would be out of date within months. The shape of the limit is what matters, and the shape is: plenty for bursts, tight for a heavy continuous day.
What a business owner can genuinely do on free
All three of these are comfortably inside the free plan for a small operation:
- Build a Reply Pack. Paste in your prices, hours and the ten questions customers keep asking, then generate your standard answers once. This is a one-off effort that keeps paying. See how to answer customer messages at night.
- Write a week of posts in one sitting. Feed it your own photos and facts, get seven captions, schedule them, close the tab.
- Read your numbers back. Paste in this week's sales, even from a photo of a notebook page, and ask what changed and what is quietly draining cash.
Notice that all three are bursts. An hour on Monday. That is exactly the usage pattern the free plan suits.
Where free actually breaks
You will feel the ceiling in these situations:
- Long documents, repeatedly. Feeding in big files uses your allowance fast.
- All-day use. If you are going back to it every ten minutes through a working day, you will hit the wall by afternoon.
- More than one person. Accounts are per person. Two staff means two accounts, or one person becomes a bottleneck.
- Anything automatic. This is the big one. If you want replies to go out on their own, without a human pasting them in, that is a different thing entirely. It runs through the API, which is billed by usage and is separate from the free plan and separate from the ₱1,140 subscription.
The distinction that confuses everyone: the free plan and the paid plan are for you, sitting at a keyboard. Automation that runs while you sleep uses the API, which is a different bill. Neither plan turns into automation just by paying more.
The honest test for upgrading
The paid tier is about ₱1,140 a month. Do not upgrade because you feel you should. Upgrade when one of these is true:
- You have hit the cap and had to stop working, more than once, in the same week.
- You are pasting in long documents as a normal part of the job rather than occasionally.
- The thing you now do with it in an hour used to take you most of a day, and you would happily pay ₱1,140 to keep that hour.
If none of those are true yet, stay free. You are not missing a secret better version. The model is the same.
One thing worth setting up either way
Free or paid, the single biggest improvement is not the plan. It is giving it your business once, properly, in a document you reuse, instead of re-explaining yourself every session. That is the difference between asking for a favour each time and having something that compounds. We wrote about that in why AI tips never made you money, and systems do.
